Styrax obassia - snowbell tree
Attractive large shrub or small round-headed tree. Alternate, large ovate leaves with a soft hairy tomentum underneath. Peeling grey-brown bark. Terminal racemes of scented bell-shaped white flowers in June.
Moist, well drained soil, preferably acid but at least lime-free. Hardy but best in a sunny, warm, sheltered position. Young growth can be damaged by severe late spring frosts.
